Resilience in the Face of Change: Ancient Wisdom for Modern Entrepreneurs

Sei Weng lived on the border and was fond of horses. One day, his horse ran away into the territory of the Hu people, which caused his neighbors to feel sorry for him. But, Sei Weng asked, “How do you know this is not a good thing?”

Several months later, the horse returned, bringing with it a fine horse from the Hu people. The neighbors congratulated Sei Weng, but he replied, “How do you know this is not a bad thing?”

Later, Sei Weng’s son rode the new horse, fell off, and broke his leg. Again, the neighbors offered their sympathy for this misfortune. But Sei Weng asked, “How do you know this is not a good thing?”

A year later, the Hu people invaded the border. All able-bodied young men took up arms and fought, and the majority of them died. Because Sei Weng’s son had a broken leg, they didn’t recruit him. Both he and his father survived.

What can we learn from this ancient story?

  1. Impermanence and the Nature of Change

  2. Relativity of Good and Bad

  3. Resilience and Equanimity

  4. The Limitations of Human Judgment

  5. Acceptance and Non-Attachment

  6. Patience

  7. Interconnectedness of Events

  8. Wisdom in Uncertainty

So as an aspiring entrepreneur, how do you apply these lessons?

  1. Embrace Change and Uncertainty

  2. Reevaluate Your Perspective on Failure and Success

  3. Cultivate Resilience and Equanimity

  4. Acknowledge the Limits of Prediction

  5. Practice Acceptance and Let Go of Attachment

  6. Be Patient and Trust the Process

  7. Recognize the Interconnectedness of Events

  8. Find Wisdom in Facing the Unknown

Implementing These Lessons:

  1. Reflect Regularly

  2. Stay Educated

  3. Build a Support Network

  4. Mindfulness Practices

We all have the tendency to place judgement on situations. Just accept situations as they come.

I’m not diving too deep into this right here. If you want a little more context check the whole article right here:

Money Intervention

I’m not going to dive into the hustle of the week. There’s a realization that struck me as quite shocking. If you don’t tackle this first, a side hustle will only be an extra burden.

I’ve noticed that out of the 10 “efforts” people made to subscribe to premium. 4 are declined. Like, how in hell does your credit card decline on a 2,97 subscription? This is not only an insane 40% decline rate, but a real eye-opener.

I have the feeling that many people are looking for side hustles to cover these gaps. Reality is, and this is something people don’t like to hear, you need to start with the basics. Which is financial management. There’s nothing crucial I’m hiding behind paywalls. Everything is accessible for free.

Do not consider this to be an attack, but rather an eye-opener. I’ll be sharing 2 articles to help you navigate this issue. Please do not take this too lightly. If you can’t control your spending a side hustle is not going to make your life easier. It’s just another burden you’ll take on.

My good friend and Senior Director of Innovation at Media.Monks Funs send me the following update:

This is really 'next level'... The latest Google Gemini software update "understands" what's happening in a video and can report on it. Amazing. I can't find another word.

In this demo video, a 44-minute video gets uploaded. Then, the researcher asks the software to find the moment a piece of paper is taken from someone's pocket and describe what it says.

"Find the moment a piece of paper is taken from the person's pocket and tell me some key information on it, with the timecode."

The software can do this.

"At 12:01, a piece of paper is taken from the person's pocket. It's a pawn ticket from I. Goldman & Co. Pawn Brokers, dated 10/23/1924, for a watch and chain pawned for $4.00. The ticket is signed by Will Smith."

This marks a big step forward in video recognition. We're already familiar with recognizing objects and systems that can describe a picture. But now, we're moving into the next chapter: video.

This has wide-ranging implications. For instance, if your job involves watching videos to recognize situations, increasingly, software can take over. (And if those videos are boring, it's no big deal: let the computer handle it.)

Another outcome: it becomes easier to search for specific scenes in YouTube videos: "Find the scene from YouTuber Kortom where the student Kyan says 'altijd herres'."

And what about surveillance? Does this mean software will better understand what's happening in camera recordings? Can you hardly do anything without a 'smart camera' noticing your actions?

Also, I've written about this before: Google also owns YouTube. Imagine such AI systems could analyze all YouTube videos ever (!) and provide context. Visual input as a new data source for these AI systems. The overwhelming amount of information that would be unlocked is hard to comprehend.

After all, YouTube is our digital mirror. How much of our human 'source code' will be deciphered by these machines? And though this may seem like a scenario for the future, it's suddenly not science fiction anymore.
